Nicosia book festival

The first-ever Nicosia Book Fest was taking place on Sunday at the Acropolis Park in Nicosia and was pronounced a huge success by organisers with scores of visitors taking part.

Chrysostom Pasiardis, the head of the organising committee told the Cyprus News Agency that they now hoped to make the festival a regular thing. The event aimed at raising awareness of reading in Cyprus as it was not something most Cypriots engaged in.

“We know that organising a festival alone will not solve the problem but we hope that this is a principle that will become a tradition and will help greatly to establish the book in the consciousness of everyone,” he said.

Over 40 organisations, bookstores, libraries, universities, literary agents and publishers were taking part.

Gathering everyone together was a process that lasted six months, Pasiardis said. Visitors to the event were able to walk through various stands and talk with authors.

AKEL general secretary Andros Kyprianou also visited saying it was important for people to learn about the benefits of reading books. He said the party was planning to come up with a comprehensive plan for the creation of a new state library. He also said local authors need to be supported more.

Organisers of the festival include the Prometheus Institute, the government press and information office (PIO), Strovolos Municipality and the Cyprus Youth Board.
